Having committed to extend the experience of the graduate year of the BA Acting course in 2017 and to find them new stages on which to perform, East 15 first chose to commission two new plays from leading writers. They then sought to take this work beyond the confines of their own campus theatres and, having already worked with the venue on successful foyer performances in the past, found a perfect partner for the venture in the Queen’s Theatre.

Celebrated Camden writer Che Walker (Royal Court and National Theatre) gives us a new play that takes its cue from the lives of Anne Bonny and Mary Read, the notorious 18th Century pirates and cross-dressing lesbian lovers.

Of his new play about Anne Bonny and Mary Read, Che Walker explains:

“I was interested in how we came to live the way we live, and how the ego had to fight to push the human race forward. The Caribbean Pirates in the 18th Century, though often ruthless and amoral, did strike a blow for Liberty, especially Anne Bonny and Mary Read. There are several explorations of intense female friendships throughout my earlier plays and this felt like a natural relationship to explore. The script is different to my other plays in that there is real history behind it but not much reverence shown towards it. Hopefully it’s vivid and passionate and muscular and wild.”

This show contains strong language and subjects of an adult nature.
