Upminster Art Society was founded on Sunday 25th October 1955 by Dr. Anthony with a small group of people interested in art. Since then the Society has always been closely connected with Upminster and Cranham. The society began in Dr. Anthony’s surgery in Cranham. The first meetings were held on Sundays in the surgery where members brought their work to be assessed by the others. Soon more room was needed and the meetings moved to Oglethorpe School. Subsequent venues include the Clock House, Upminster Junior School (The Bell) and Upminster Court.
When the Council decided to sell the Upminster Court and we were fortunate to find accommodation at Cranham Community Centre, where we are today – a return to our “spiritual home”.
We meet on Wednesday evenings from 7pm to 10pm. We are a small group but have an interesting and varied programme. We have a projector that allows us to show DVD,s by professional artists and project images for “indoor sketching trips” a useful addition to our programme options. Whilst we are not now a tutoring society our programme continues to provide plenty of scope to develop our skills, as well as enjoy the challenges (and frustrations) of painting.
We are a very friendly society with plenty of “banter” and enthusiasm and will always welcome new members. Contact Terry Doyle – Chairman. Email: firstname.lastname@example.org<mailto:email@example.com>. Phone: 01708 532967
