adapted from A Kestrel for a Knave
by Barry Hines

Billy Casper, an apparently backward fifteen year-old boy, is neglected by his tarty mother, beaten by his older brother and bullied at school.

He finds solace in his pet kestrel, on which he lavishes admiration and affection. It is not so much the training of the young hawk that is important, but the effect it has on Billy’s motivation and sense of self-worth, qualities which neither his school nor family have sought to develop.

A Kestrel for a Knave is essentially about a community which fails its young and one young man’s ability to rise above this.

This production will complement the GCSE English Literature curriculum and will make an effective live performance study for GCSE Drama students. It is also highly relevant to the PSHE curriculum.

“(I enjoyed) the production’s accessibility for students – they especially related to the school scenes.” – Class Teacher, Mark Hall School

“(I enjoyed) the inventive use of the props and set. Great comic moments and super acting .The children will be inspired to act out their own scenes.” – Class Teacher, Warren School

“It was an excellent balance of seriousness and comedy. Kes was a wonderful performance that kept the attention of every student. As a behaviour unit you can understand that their attention span is often very limited but the actors managed to keep their attention. They laughed clapped and were sad in all the right places. It is definitely something we will do again in the future. The actors and crew were very professional and we really enjoyed the day.” – Class Teacher, Birnum Wood Pupil Referral Unit

“Very fluid multi-rolling and great comic characters. Very impressed! Fantastic staging! Would love to book you again for the Autumn run.” – Class Teacher, King John School
