martin roberts, sign language interpreter

Martin RobertsBorn and brought up in Darlington, Martin initially trained as an Actor at Artts International, York. After working professionally for five years in various roles both in TV and Theatre, he set up his own business in Theatre Promotions, which ran for three years. He is now based in London, working as a Theatre Manager in a renowned 'Off Westend' Venue. He lives with his partner who is Deaf and British Sign Language is the first language used at home.

Martin has been signing since 1999 and currently has completed BSL Level 4 CACDP (Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People). He is now reading for the UCLAN/SLI Post Graduate Diploma in BSL/English Interpreting. Martin is registered with the CACDP Independent Registration Panel (JTI) and a member of ASLI, (Association of Sign Language Interpreters).

Along side his work as a Theatre Manager, Martin's other work involves Communication Support and Interpreting in rehearsals, workshops and for performances. This includes; rehearsals for 'The Irish Giant' (New Breed Theatre Co., Manchester), Summer Workshop (Half Moon Young People's Theatre, London), performance of 'Breast Strokes' (Stella Duffy at BAC, London), Development of 'Bent' (Graeae Theatre Co, London), performances and workshops at The Big Youth Theatre Festival 05,06 and 07 (National Association of Youth Theatres, Epping Forest ), rehearsals for 'Listening Eyes' (Green Candle Theatre Co, London), performance of 'The Ratchatcher of Hamelin' (BAC, London), performance of 'Low Life' (Blind Summit Theatre / LIMF at BAC, London), performance of 'Conquest to the South Pole' (Theatre Resource, Essex), 'Igloo Hullabaloo' workshop programme and 'Icicle Bicycle' workshop programme(Half Moon Young People's Theatre), performance of 'Rapunzel' (Kneehigh Theatre Co. and BAC, London), ITV1's new drama series 'Talk to Me', 'Sensory Journeys' an installation workshop and the Summer University workshop (Half Moon Young People's Theatre, London), tour with Blind Summit Theatre's performance of 'Low Life' (Tobacco Factory, Bristol and The Unity Theatre, Liverpool, 'Raising The Game' a workshop programme (National Association of Youth Theatres) and most recently a performance of 'The Masque of the Red Death' (BAC, London). In addition to this, his work has also included; BBC Television Centre, Greenwich Maritime Museum, London and he continues to work for Oak Lodge Deaf School, 16 plus and as a Community Interpreter.

Martin enjoys watching films, camping and the outdoors, cooking and his favourite TV programme is Most Haunted.
